The Idea
After the Architecture café was closed in September 2010, a lot of interest was generated at the prospect of establishing a student-run café on campus. A recent discussion among the undergraduate faculty presidents brought about the idea of creating a case competition for the design of a café, created by students, run by students and for the students – all with environmental and economic sustainability in mind.
And so, the SSMU Sustainability Case Competition was born. The competition has three main objectives:
- To create a student-managed, McGill-wide collaboration among students in the domain of environmental sustainability.
- To provide students with the opportunity to network with one another as well as with industry professionals.
- To obtain a proposal for a student-run café that is innovative and implementable.

The Challenge
Students are asked to communicate their vision for the new sustainable student-run café. In the first round, teams of six students are asked to submit a short descriptive proposal for the sustainable, student-run café.
The requirements for the second round are a bit more comprehensive. Throughout the second round, the teams will be mentored by professionals in the environmental sustainability industry. The best proposal is chosen by a panel of judges (including the mentors) during an exposition day in the middle of March. The winning team receives a prize of $ 6000 and the prestige of having a potentially implementable design plan for the new student-run café!
Prizes
First place: team prize of $4,000
Second place: team prize of $2,000
Third place: team prize of $1,000
Stay tuned for details about the Exposition Day in March 2012, where all the teams will present their ideas!
